Exposed Aggregate Concrete - A world of options
Exposed aggregate concrete and the amazing decorative values for your home
Perhaps you recently were on holiday and saw a beautiful driveway leading to an excellent sidewalk and patio in the getaway spot you spent your last vacation. Upon closer look, you discovered those beautiful decorations are made of stones, exposed in a way that makes them seem so attractive. In your amazement, you didn’t know when you asked: how did they make this environment so beautiful?!
Those patios, floors, pavements and sidewalks are done by removing the top layer on concrete from the surface to expose the color and texture of aggregates underneath it.
What is exposed aggregate concrete?
It is a concrete with surface removed to reveal the beneath aggregates for decorative purposes. The exposure is achieved by applying a retarder to the surface before the setting of the concrete, for easier removal of the cement paste to the desired depth to expose the aggregate in the concrete.
Will removing top cement of the concrete not affect the durability of the concrete?
No. Removing, the upper part of exposed aggregate concrete, won’t affect the longevity or quality of the concrete because this type of concrete was specially designed for the purpose. In fact, the decorative aggregate will now become very durable and skid resistant; a surface well accommodating for sidewalks, pool decks, and driveways, and patios.
How is exposed aggregate concrete made?
There is no special mixing for exposed aggregate concrete. It uses the conventional concrete, with three different methods for incorporating the decorative aggregate into the concrete. Also, the way of exposing the aggregate depends on the size of the job.
Method #1: Seeding the aggregate onto the concrete surface. It is the standard way of adding the seed (the decorative aggregate) onto the slab surface soon after placing the concrete. It involves uniformly sprinkling the aggregates using hand or shovel until the slab surface is all covered by a thin layer of cement paste.
Method #2: Placing the aggregate into a thin topping. This method is on the high side of cost depending on the type of aggregate you choose, and more will be required because the decorative aggregate will be added to the ready mix concrete at the point of creation during batching, thus eliminating the first method.
Method #3: Put the aggregate into a thin topping. The last method is to place a light topping course of decorative aggregate-filled concrete over a base of the slab of conventional concrete. The range of thickness of the topping can be from 1 to 2 inches according to the size of aggregate.
Methods for revealing decorative aggregate
After incorporating the aggregates and placing the concrete, there is the need to expose the aggregate's decorative beauty as that is the primary purpose of the application.
Two methods are used for revealing aggregates, see below:
